One of Gaming’s Most Hilarious Twitter Accounts Is Shutting Down

On Twitter, everyone thinks they're a comedian, but few actually pull it off. CEO Kaz Hirai, a parody account of actual Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, has consistently been one of the funniest satires of the games industry since the account was started six years ago. Sometime next year, the still-anonymous creator will shut down the account.

"I originally started it because I wanted to make jokes about video game news, rumors and press conferences, but I knew nobody in real life would have got them," they wrote in a statement last night. "Between then and now I have somehow inexplicably managed to gain over 100,000 followers."

What made them most proud, however, was eventually being followed by the head of Sony's worldwide studios division, Shuhei Yoshida. (They were even featured in a 2016 CES presentation by Sony, where Sony poked fun at themselves.)

It turns out there's a reason the account has been tweeting less, though.

"While I still spend plenty of time playing video games, I spend a lot less time following video game news," they said. "I don't watch every press conference like I used to, and I am now not normally online when a big news story breaks. I also find myself repeating jokes more and more often. It turns out there are a finite number of ways you can say 'nobody wants a Vita' or 'The Last Guardian/Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts has been delayed!'"

Every joke runs out of steam, but fake Kaz Hirai plans to go out with a bang. They'll be sticking around for one more E3, and come up with a "proper ending," whatever that means. The only reason they announced an ending was to hold themselves to it.

"I hope that you have enjoyed one or two of my tweets as much as I have enjoyed writing all of them," they wrote.

You can definitely count me as a fan, buddy. Here are some of my favorites:
