Pelt Children with an Ice Cream Cannon in ‘Sweetwave’

The world is ending, and you have ice cream. So what do you do?

Sweetwave sort of starts with a premise out of a classic The Twilight Zone episode: the world is ending because planet earth is getting closer and closer to the sun. But instead of trying to survive in a cramped apartment, the protagonist of Spacetronaut's Global Game Jam game takes up arms against the swarms of children and weird monsters prowling the streets. And shoots an ice cream cannon at them. For profit.

It's sort of like a 3D, crayon-colored Space Invaders with ice cream instead of lasers, and a bleak message about the end of capitalism (and the human race). You make money on every "sale," and it's ostensibly your goal to rack up big bucks. But at the very end, as your score is tallied, the game fades out, telling you it's "too bad" that you'll never spend any of that hard-earned cash.

At the very least, this frozen-dessert-hurling protagonist is doing something in their final moments. Providing some sort of happiness, I suppose, with life's precious last gasps. Even if they are, after all, getting rich—and dying trying.
