There's a good chance we're going to look back at 2017 as one of gaming's best years, and we're only halfway to the finish line. It's still remarkable to me that I haven't poured more hours into games like Yakuza 0 and Nioh, games that would otherwise be in the mix for my top 10 list when the holidays begin to approach. Thankfully, for a brief and shining moment, we have a breather. There are still games coming out—Nex Machina, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, and Valkyria Revolution, for example—but for many, this is a chance to play catch up.I'm worried that I'll end up spending the next few weeks pouring another couple dozen hours into PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in search of (more) chicken dinner, but I'm also curious to give Hitman a shot, now that the game's opening level is free. Besides wanting to support a developer whose work I've admired over the years, especially one that's been through a tough patch, if there's any game that I regret not spending time with in 2017, it's Hitman. Too many of my friends were obsessed with it, suggesting I'd missed out on something I'd have enjoyed.But it's also tempting to revisit some of the games I mentioned earlier, like Yakuza 0. I was having a blast learning about a bizarre Sega franchise that'd I'd previously ignored, but when Horizon Zero Dawn showed up, the allure of robot dinosaurs was too much.
