‘Demon’s Souls’ Finally Going Offline Next Year

You’ll still be able to play the 'Dark Souls' predecessor, but you’ll be on your own.

Back in 2012, Atlus tried to move on from Demon’s Souls, announcing the game’s online servers would soon be turned off. Fans revolted, however, and Atlus promptly announced the servers would remain online for “the foreseeable future.” That “foreseeable future” is apparently February 28, 2018; on that day, Demon’s Souls will finally—for the second time, and likely for real—be going offline.

“After 9 years of reoccurring deaths and frustrations,” said the company on Twitter, “but just as many triumphs of dedication, Demon's Souls online servers will terminate on February 28, 2018. Play online one last time, and share with us your best Demon's Souls moment!”

This means no more bloodstains, no more summoning friends for jolly cooperation, no more hint messages that suggest you should jump off a nearby cliff in search of “treasure,” and no more ghosts wandering around, whispers of other players trying the same challenge as you.

Demon’s Souls changed games when it launched in in 2009, even if most, including yours truly, didn’t come around to the series until the spiritual sequel, Dark Souls. It’s not a series I expected to fall in love with, but it’s one that’s given the highest of highs and the lowest of lows over the course of many games. One can only hope the servers going offline for the PlayStation 3 version of Demon’s Souls means we’ll get a proper remastering of the modern classic, but if this merely means the end of Demon’s Souls' online life, it’s had a good run.

You’ll still be able to play Demon’s Souls, obviously, but it just won’t be the same.
