‘ZombiU’ Is Waypoint 101’s Next Game

We’re kicking off 2018 by revisiting one of the most underrated zombie thrillers.

Battling zombies is a familiar premise, which makes games that do something original all the more interesting. Once upon a time, ZombiU was a Wii U launch title. The Wii U fizzling out, however, meant most missed a game that made zombies scary by ensuring every choice—firing a bullet, swinging a bat, looking at your inventory—had consequence. When you die, you respawn, but as a new character. Your equipment is gone, attached to the body that’s now turned a shambling corpse. Do you press on, or risk tracking down and killing your old self? Choices.

This is why ZombiU—called Zombi on non-Wii U platforms—is our next Waypoint 101 game. Some (i.e. me) might argue Wii U is the best way to play the game, but it’s also available on Steam, Xbox One, and PS4. The Xbox One version is part of January’s Games With Gold, and in a stroke of fine luck, Zombi just went live for anyone using it.

The episode discussing the game will be published on January 30. Here's one big change: we're only recording a single episode for each Waypoint 101 entry in the future. It's one and done. If you finish the game, great. If not, that's OK! We want to make sure Waypoint 101 has more regularity in 2018, and as part of that, we're changing the approach. To make sure we have enough Zombi to discuss, we're playing at least as far as the Tower of London. (Hint: It involves a helicopter.)

If you have questions you want us to discuss, send them to gaming@vice.com with the subject “Waypoint 101: ZombiU” and we’ll throw it into the pile.
