Kiss Your Nearest 8-Legged Friend in ‘Bugs and Kisses’

Visual novel and entomology collide in the demo for ‘Bugs and Kisses.’

It's not everyday you look at the ground, see a little bug and think, "Huh, maybe we could be friends." Bugs and Kisses is going to change that. With their powers combined, comic creator Aliza Layne and entomologist Esabelle Ryngin have made the visual novel of visual novels. A QUEER BUG DATING SIM. Extremely my jam.

You play as a beetle with the name and outfit of your choice. I named by beetle Nikaido after my favorite character in the Dorohedoro manga. No gender selection means the protagonist can be anywhere on the gender spectrum you want them to be. I chose the skirt, I just love how the bow looks! Based on a tweet from the official game account, there will be a bunch more clothing options in the finished product. Very exciting.

Bugs and Kisses doesn't have a release date yet, but the 30-minute long free demo is a full standalone story. Your club wasn't selected to participate in the school festival, but your friends welcome your help and company. See a fashion show, help make a net, and get your fortune read. You get a few minutes with each of your cute friends, and at the end you get to choose which one you walk home. Who will you choose?

Answering questions to determine your outcome isn't all there is to this game. There's an entomologist on the team after all! I learned more about bugs in the 30-minute Bugs and Kisses demo than I did in school, and it was done in a way that not only made me feel a bit smarter, but made me feel connected to whichever bug friend was giving me the information!

Bugs and Kisses set my heart fluttering. The art, bubbly soundtrack (by Eden Evelyn Rosalina), and lovable characters make me very excited to see what the full game will have to offer. For now, you can play the full 30-minute demo for free on itch.io.
