Enjoy Some Stark and Stoney Psychedelia from ABBY and Niconé

Something soft and steely from Berlin.

There's an unshakeable mood about this track. Whether it's the gently pulsing kick drum, the wistful vocal melodies, or chirruping analog synths, the whole thing is packed with tension and longing. Perhaps that's got something to do with the remix's original source. This cut, reworked to sinister effect by Niconé, is from ABBY. The German quartet have been producing their strain of a dark psychedelia for a while now, via EPs and appearances alongside the likes of John Talabot, Moderat and George Morales. Ahead of the release of their latest album, Hexagon, the four-piece are spreading their electronic wings even further, having confirmed their new record has been influenced by touches of techno. The bands vocalist, Filou, said of his band's new affectation, "we can all get along with techno's abstractions and feeling of togetherness. We all like to party – all four of us soon realised that Berlin is not just an aspiration, it's a real way of life that you have to approach with respect."

Well, "Time is Golden" might not be punishing as an average R&S release, but the effect of rumbling dark-room rhythms has clearly had it's effect. The tone is cold and decidedly raw, whilst retaining the swimming, warmer elements that the band have been behind since they began. Hats off also to fellow Berlin resident Niconé who has taken the track to such rich, and potent, places. Listen below.
