Crate Expectations: Shadow Child

Simon Neale has gone by many aliases throughout his career. Here are the tracks that made him who he is today.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Shadow Child.

What's the first song you ever loved?
That's a real tricky one. It's hard to remember but I guess it would be something like Musical Youth's "Pass The Dutchie." I just remember really relating to a band that was basically made up of kids. I was five or six when it came out and I remember my mum buying it for me. I also went to see them when they came to our town on tour. It was the first real pop record I owned.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
You'll laugh, but I used to try mixing cassette tape with vinyl at the same time. When I was 11 I had my parents old Music Centre and if you pressed the tape and phono buttons at the same time, both channels would come through the speakers. As soon as I realized what beat matching was all about, I'd try and copy it by pushing a piece of vinyl around with my finger until the beats matched.

I can tell you exactly that one of the tracks was Londonbeat's "There's An Acid House Going On," which belonged to my stepdad. He had bought the 12" for the A-side, "9AM," a soul acapella record, but on the flip was this amazing acid track, the first I'd ever heard. The other was more than likely "Good Life" by Inner City.

Which song is your guiltiest pleasure?
Recently it's been The Beatmasters' "Hey DJ." My wife and I stumbled upon it again a couple of years back during a crazy road diversion through the countryside. We were bored, and scanning through different radio stations when it came on. Love it, sorry!

What song have you had on repeat in the past month?
Several, but the one standout is probably Vellico's "Pennines." It really is something special in my view!

Which track of your own do you like the most?
That's tricky. I suppose it's the remix I did for Yousef; Charli Taft's vocals are sublime and were great to work with.

Which track of your own do you hate the most?
None really. I guess the one I like the least, though, is my remix of Liam Bailey's "When Will They Learn." Nothing against Mr. Bailey, I just feel like I rushed it!

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
Easy. Zero B's "Lockup." That one works anytime. It holds so many memories for me, most recently from my wedding. The last hour and a half was pretty much a rave. Amazing times that I'd do anything to relive!
