I Subjected My Family to MMA, And I Don’t Regret It

The UFC should probably come with a blood warning.

This weekend, while doing a family visit for my dad’s surgery, I had the sublime pleasure of introducing loved ones to a thing I adore—that they certainly do not. I watched a few fights of the Fight Night Fresno card. Well, I watched most of the fights, they went to sleep after a short time. But they did catch most of the Alexis Davis/Liz Carmouche match (an errant fire alarm in the hotel notwithstanding).

It was a good fight! But, naturally, I was as excited as could be, showing off a thing I love to people I love. I explained most of the major points, painfully aware of how much the sport looks, on first glance, like two strangers stripping down to their underwear, beating the pulp out of one another and grinding their asses into one another’s faces. I mean, all of the above does happen pretty frequently, but there’s more to it than that.

My mom and sister were somewhat… less than impressed, despite my best efforts to impress upon them the strategic value of advancing one’s position and…

Oh, it’s ok. At least they found it very amusing that the opponents hugged and shook hands after the fight.

It’s ok, I still love it.
